The Muslim attitudes survey reveals a loyal community, keen on integration – far from the usual stereotypes
My British glass is half empty. According to a Gallup poll released yesterday, only half of the UK population identifies itself as very strongly British. And in Germany only 32% of the general public feels that way about being German. Who then identifies most strongly with their nation, reaching a whopping 77% in the UK? Muslims. This refreshing piece of information is part of a wider picture that Gallup paints of a European Muslim population that is more tolerant and integrated, as well as more strongly identified with Europe's nations than other communities.

First official tally of victims when schools collapsed last yearFigures released days before anniversary of disaster
China said today that 5,335 schoolchildren and students had died or remained missing after last year's Sichuan earthquake, the first official tally in what became a politically charged issue because of allegations of corruption and shoddy school construction. The overall death toll in the May 12 quake was unchanged at 68,712. Almost 18,000 people are still listed as missing, the head of Sichuan civil affairs department, Huang Mingquan, said in the provincial capital of Chengdu.

Pope Visits Middle East After Comments Anger Muslims and Jews
Pope Benedict XVI arrives in the Middle East tomorrow on a trip Israel calls a “Bridge for Peace.” The pontiff may find it more like a tightrope after his actions strained ties with both Jews and Muslims. The Vatican cancelled his planned meeting with an Israeli Arab mayor after Israeli Tourism Minister Stas Misezhnikov accused the mayor of promoting terrorism. In Jordan, the Islamic Action Front, a bloc affiliated with the Muslim Brotherhood, said the pope was “not welcome” because he hasn’t apologized for linking Islam and the Prophet Mohammed to violence.

Troops mark their withdrawal from Basra with ceremony to remember fallen comrades
The names were read out one by one as a piper played laments. The final goodbye to Iraq was marked by remembering those who will not make it home. In London, Gordon Brown, the Prime Minister, declared an official end to combat operations in a conflict which had lasted longer than either of the World Wars. In Basra, it was a somber and reflective farewell to arms for British troops as they went on their last patrols along streets where they had fought battles and lost comrades.

Afghanistan’s president may be schmoozing Barack Obama in Washington today, but what of the country he left behind?
When President Hamid Karzai drove to Kabul airport to fly to America earlier this week, the centre of the Afghan capital was closed down by well-armed security men, soldiers and policemen. On his arrival in Washington he will begin two days of meetings, starting today, with President Barack Obama and Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari about their joint efforts to combat the Taliban. Karzai is also to deliver a speech at the Brookings Institution think tank on “effective ways of fighting terrorism.” The title of his lecture shows a certain cheek. Karzai’s seven years in power since the overthrow of the Taliban in 2001 have been notable for his failure to prevent their resurgence.
