Barak: Netanyahu will bend on Palestinian state
Israel's defence minister said in an interview that he expects Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to agree to the principle of Palestinian statehood — something the Israeli leader has balked at doing since taking office a month ago. Netanyahu is coming under increasing pressure from Washington to resume peacemaking with the Palestinians, a process designed ultimately to create a Palestinian state that would live alongside Israel peacefully within fixed borders.

Arlen Specter's decision likely to give Democrats a filibuster-proof majority
Washington - In a huge boost for Barack Obama and his reformist programme , the veteran Pennsylvania Republican Arlen Specter announced yesterday he was switching to the Democrats. The shock move underlines the growing marginalization of the Republicans in US politics, and makes it more than likely his new party will soon have a filibuster-proof majority in the Senate.

As Anzac Day approaches, campaigners want Australia's war memorial to recognise the forgotten Aborigines killed by white settlers
The Australian War Memorial, an imposing building on the shores of Lake Burley Griffin in Canberra, honors the dead of two world wars as well as other conflicts, including Korea, Malaysia and Vietnam. But the bloody and prolonged battles that accompanied white settlement of Australia, and claimed at least 20,000 Aboriginal lives, rate barely a mention.

Mexico attempts to contain swine flu virus
Mexican and US health officials are searching for signs that an outbreak of a new flu strain is spreading further, after it killed up to 68 people in Mexico and infected eight in the United States. As Mexico shut schools and museums and axed public events, global health officials stopped short of declaring a pandemic. But they warned more cases could come to light, making up a major outbreak, as the flu spreads between people and infected some individuals who had no contact with one another.
